Juliana Chan

Professor Juliana Chan is Chair Professor at the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics. Director, Hong Kong Institute of Diabetes and Obesity and Director, Clinical Research Management Office at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH). She is also the co-director of the CUHK-PWH International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Centre of Education and Chief Executive Officer of the Asia Diabetes Foundation. She graduated in UK and is an accredited endocrinologist and clinical pharmacologist with training in psychiatry and epidemiology. Her areas of interest include epidemiology, genomics/genetics, clinical trials and care models in diabetes. She is a member of an NIH funded Global Consortium and Asia Genetic Epidemiology Network to discover causal genes in type 2 diabetes and steering committees of multi-national diabetes clinical trials. In 1995, she set up the Hong Kong Diabetes Registry as a quality improvement program which lays the foundation for a government-funded thematic research to use multiomic analysis to discover genetic regulation of diabetic complications for personalized care. In 2007, she set up the Asia Diabetes Foundation to develop the first web-based Joint Asia Diabetes Evaluation (JADE) Program which uses information technology, protocols and decision support to establish an Asia Diabetes Database to promote quality care and collaborative research. She has co-authored in 500 peer-reviewed articles, including editorials and commentaries and 20 book chapters. In 2009, she received the Chinese Women Physicians Association Intercontinental Innovation Award under the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology. In 2011, the CUHK-PWH Diabetes Centre was selected as an IDF Centre of Education in recognition of its commitment to use professional education and research to change practice and influence policy. In 2014, she became a member of the Hong Kong Government Steering Committee for the Control and Prevention of Noncommunicable disease.
