Ian de Boer
Dr. de Boer is Associate Professor of Medicine and Adjunct Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the Kidney Research Institute, Division of Nephrology, University of Washington. He is a leading world expert in the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetic kidney disease. Dr. de Boer’s research has helped define the scope and changing clinical manifestations of diabetic kidney disease in the United States as well as the strong impact of kidney disease on the long-term health of patients with diabetes. His work with the DCCT/EDIC Research Group established the critical role of intensive glycemic control in the prevention of kidney disease in type 1 diabetes, and he currently leads clinical trials evaluating new approaches to prevent diabetic kidney disease and its complications. Dr. de Boer has published more than 190 manuscripts in the field. He receives grant funding from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and the JDRF, and he is a member of the editorial boards of four leading nephrology journals. Dr. de Boer has combined his research knowledge with clinical experience as a practicing Nephrologist in Seattle, WA to discuss the clinical management of patients with diabetic kidney disease at meetings of the American Diabetes Association and American Society of Nephrology as well as international venues.
