Yan-Chuan Shi

Dr Yanchuan Shi (Yan) is a clinician scientist, currently the group leader of Neuroendocrinology Group within the Diabetes and Metabolism Division at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. Dr Shi’s research focus encompasses the neuroendocrine regulation of food intake, adipose tissue thermogenesis & metabolism, insulin secretion & glucose homeostasis, with a special emphasis on centrally-and peripherally-produced neuropeptide Y family members. Dr Yanchuan Shi obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Medicine followed by a Masters' degree in Nutrition in China; She worked as a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer at Tianjin Medical University before coming IMVS/Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia on a competitive WHO fellowship. After being awarded an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS), she commenced her PhD in bone research at the Garvan Institute & UNSW Sydney where she received her PhD in Medicine in 2006. Dr Shi started her post-doctoral training at the Eating Disorders Research Laboratory within the Neuroscience Division at Garvan and she was promoted to Group Leader of Neuroendocrinology in 2014, leading her independent research. In February 2012, Dr Shi received her Australian Medical Council (AMC) Certificate after successfully re-qualifying for her Australian medical license, allowing her to practice medicine in Australia. She is currently a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at St Vincent's Clinical School, Faculty of Medicine, UNSW Sydney.
